Crawling Down the Phantom Rock in Wayanad
Hello Guys, Hoping everyone is doing well, so as promised another article this week, continuing to post one a week. So don’t forget to subscribe my blog & Youtube channel to keep reading & watching about beautiful places to visit.
This is the 3rd part of our trip to Wayanad, Kerala as we head towards our 3rd spot to visit the Phantom Rock. After Visiting the Memories of the Past at Wayanad Heritage Museum or Ambalavayal Museum. We started our walk towards this place as it was just 3kms on the Ambalavayal Bypass Rd.
Fish Curry & Rice On our Way to the Phantom Rocks
On our way we saw a fish restaurant and after Reaching Wayanad & Hike to The Edakkal Caves we didn’t have any proper meals. The sun had already tired us up and without any thoughts we entered the place. No decisions to be made we just ordered the fish meal and cold drink. The meal was really decent, but as we were hungry, we finished everything on our plates. A small chat if we would be visiting the next spot or not after the Phantom Rock as we were a bit tired following the schedule I made.
Bill paid and we started the walk again towards the rock. After the straight road you take this left turn. To enter this road with palm trees and greenery to the left and towards your right are the hills broken down to collect the rocks. We walked towards them and saw that people have made a hollow area down there with dirty water being collected there. This place shows the harm we are causing to nature for our benefits.
Phantom Rock 0 Kms
We reached the road sign which said Phantom Rock 0 Kms walking which you will reach the gates to the Phantom Rock. We had to walk towards the dusty path to reach this place where you will see many trucks parked. And a loud machine which continues breaking the rocks into smaller pieces and trucks loading it one after the other. You can see the Phantom Rock from that place, but you need to go down a little. Crossing these rocks and dry grasslands on a narrow path to reach the rocks.

The Phantom Rock is generally an archaeological spot. And the fascinating thing about the place is the huge granite rock which looks like a skull resembling the face of Phantom. Which gives it the name more locally the Rock is called the Cheengeri Mala. People also say that it resembles slightly to Sphinx (which is a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion).
From the Rock you get a beautiful view of the valley surrounding it. There is no way to reach the top of the Phantom Rock but we found a secret adventure around. We saw this rope hanging towards the right side of the place leading to the bottom which we followed. At the bottom it was littered with beer bottles and garbage so we took the other path. All three of us literally crawled through this rock to reach the other end of the place with trees around and met these kids. Who were from the localities and smiled at us seeing the dirt on our clothes. As they told us that there was another easy way to that place to see the view.
It started Raining
We spent some time into those rocks and trees with the view ahead of us. When it started raining and we had to run towards the other path which we could have taken the first time. Also, before the rains we discovered this other path with a rope leading down into the forest but didn’t take that not knowing where it would have taken us.
So that will be the story of Phantom Rock next week will take you to another place / or a spot to visit in God’s Own Country. As Wayanad has more to come. Hope you like the way I elaborated it so long adding everything that happened there comment down below if you like this way of the article. Will wait for the comments. Thank You.
