The Evening Well Spent at Banasura Dam in Wayanad. After our rushing trip to the Kuruva Island to get the last ticket of the day to explore the place. Which was an awesome experience to take the Bamboo log boat ride and also exploring the water bodies around the island.
Local Bus to Padinjarethara Bus Stand
Time to head to the last spot, taking another local bus towards Padinjarethara Bus Stand which was just 3kms away from the Banasura Dam. After riding 2-3 local buses there we were easily communicating with people there on how to reach a particular bus stand. The ride began and we took a quick nap as we had seats in the crowded bus towards the tail. It took us an hour to reach the Bus Stand from where we had to walk for 3kms. Not we had to but we chose to as you walk around anywhere in Kerala it’s a walk to remember.
Reaching Banasura Dam
We walked towards the beautiful road with coconut trees and a bridge under which the water was almost dry. Except some spots resembling like an oasis in a desert. After taking the tickets for visiting the dam you can either take the traveller vehicle, which takes you to the top with others. Charging just 10INR as he drops you at the top or you can take the staircases to walk till the top.
The Banasura Dam
The Banasura Dam is the largest earth dam of India and second largest in Asia. Which is completely made out of mud. It was a part of the Banasurasagar Product which included building a dam and a canal in 1979. The reason behind building the dam was to tackle the water shortage problem for irrigation and drinking water in seasonal dry periods.
Around The Banasura Dam
As you reach the top you get the most beautiful landscape where you would love to spend the evening. Cool breeze rolling on your face with the dam in front of you surrounded by the hills and some small islands as you gaze the view of the water body. Other than the view you can walk around the garden, take a horse ride around the corners or take the speed boat ride in the dam. The garden has statues and structures and many beautiful spots like the picture below for photography with the water surrounding it. Or for the people who want to just relax looking at the beautiful view of the dam.
We were not able to go for the boating ride as it closed with many people out there already waiting for their turn to come. So we headed to the extreme opposite area from the boating area. We chatted with this Army guy there guarding the barrier not allowed for anyone to go. About his journeys all around India the places he visited and how he settled in Kerala.
The sun was about to set and the hills around the dam started to change colors with this yellow orange tint over the water and surroundings. It was a beautiful moment as everyone walked toward the setting sun admiring the beauty of the place. Wish I could have every evening, beautiful as this was.
Heading Back
We walked down the staircases towards the bus stand and for another local bus. Yeah the best way to travel in Kerala is the local buses. Start talking to people around and reach everywhere you want. So that was our second day in Wayanad exploring the Kuruva Island, Banasura Dam and also not being able to visit the Wildlife Sanctuary.
