Visiting the Memories of the Past at Wayanad Heritage Museum or Ambalavayal Museum

After exploring/hiking the Edakkal Caves. Our next stop was Visiting the Memories of the Past at Wayanad Heritage Museum or Ambalavayal Museum.

Reaching the Museum

It was about 5-6kms from the caves so we took an auto from there. With the sun at its highest and after missing one turn, we left our Auto buddy and walked towards the Museum. It is a must visit place if you interested in the history of South India. And why not if you are here for the first time, even though I would try to skip the history class. It’s great to see what we read so much about the beautiful history of our country.

As you enter the museum it had workers cleaning up the surroundings which was properly managed. Entering the museum you need to take the tickets worth Rs 20 and you can ask for a guide if needed. The museum holds the largest collections of the remnants dating back to the 2nd century A.D.

The Wayanad museum was set up with the help of the state Archaeology Department to preserve the relics. As during the 1980s the anthropologists attempted to research and the preservation of the Edakkal Caves. They collected many artefacts from the district mainly from Sulthan Bathery, Ambalavayal and the forests around Wayanad.

Whenever I enter a museum it makes me feel if I can ever keep everything organised in my room like that. There were so many relics properly organised, tagged and also some noted if you would like to know more about the history of Wayanad. Entering the place you see the statues of Nandi – The Abode of Lord Shiva. Crossing, which you will enter the area where they have preserved the alluvial soils in glass boxes. The Museum is divided into four galleries which are Gothrasmruthi, Veerasmruthi, Devasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi.

After that we entered The Tribal Memories / Gallery 4 where they stored the daily used objects of the tribal hamlets of Wayanad. Which has remained the same for centuries. Which includes various tools for hunting, vessels to store the fish which they caught which were all made out of bamboo.

Veerasmruthi – Memories of Heroes

‘Veerakkallukal’ (literally, hero stones) are memorials for heroes who laid down their lives fighting enemies. Cattle lifting and fights to recover the stolen animals were a part of tribal life in the past. These stones had the engravings which showed the heroes fighting with the enemies.

This gallery attracts many scholars and students who are interested in archaeology. As the artefacts here are from the Neolithic age to the 17th century. Stone idols from the 12th century are preserved here.

This gallery showcases the vessels and tools of Wayanadan pastoral life and agrarian operations. Tools used for ploughing and tilling, sowing and planting, harvesting and winnowing are displayed here. It also has the musical instruments and ornaments used by the tribal people of Wayanad.

You can also try the multimedia theatre present in the museum for the tourists to watch. I don’t know what the timings are or if a regular showcase of the same goes on. But there are people in every gallery to help you if you have any questions there. And also to secure the relics present there if someone would try to destroy them.
