Bear Shola Falls – One Among the Many Waterfalls of Kodaikanal

I had some time before wrapping up my last day at Kodaikanal. So after the driver dropped me at the city, I directly went for my lunch. While there I planned the itinerary for the last part of the day. Depending on the time and also the weather looked like it would be raining.

Bear Shola Falls

Kodaikanal is famous for its waterfalls, but we were already told that all of them were dry as it doesn’t rain during that part of the year. And that they were expecting it in a week or two after which it will be the best time to visit the falls. Still, I read that the walk towards the Bear Shola Waterfall was wonderful. And set my map towards it, just when I was about to cross the Kodaikanal Lake it started raining heavily. People were excited that the rain was back, but not the tourists and me as I had to stop at this play area for kids. About the Bear Shola Falls, it is a small seasonal waterfall, little away from the city. The interesting fact about the name of this waterfall is that it was the favourite haunt of a bear who used to frequently visit this fall to drink water.

Entering the Forest

The rain stopped after 10-15 mins, but I was still in thoughts that should I go to the falls. As it was 3 km away and if it rains, I won’t have any shelter in the forest. But I took the chance to see what I can find there. And reached the entrance of the place, and saw almost no one around but nothing to stop me. There is no entry fee, but the timings are from 10 AM to 5 PM. I started my walk towards the forest which was getting denser with every 100 metres.

Meeting the Curious Group

After visiting the place, I met a group of people who were there to visit Kodaikanal that day in their bus. As they were curious watching me talk to my camera describing the place they started to talk to me. That who I was and what I was doing all alone in the forest, they were happy that I was making videos of Kodaikanal for others to see. The waterfall was dry, but it’s actually located in a wonderful area in the forest. Someone who would love to spend some peaceful time away from the crowd in nature would definitely love this place. This time I was not alone but was accompanied by the people I met at the falls while returning.

At the exit, we parted in different ways, as they were going somewhere else and me still planning my next spot. Which you too will get to know in my next article tomorrow.
