Doddabetta Peak in Ooty – The highest peak of South India
It was all sunny when we started our ride to Doddabetta – Highest Peak in Tamil Nadu/Eastern Ghats. It is about 10kms from Ooty Lake and with no traffic you can reach there in 30 minutes.
The Ride
After Ooty Lake, we headed for Doddabetta Peak. It was not much cold at the start, but when we crossed the check post to the straight road up to the Peak. The forest covers around that road made it colder and darker from the other parts. The roads were really bad in the last stretch but its totally worth as we stopped at many spots to experience the beauty of the forest. You can see the photo below showing one of the spots in the middle of the way.
Around the Doddabetta Peak
We were welcomed by the Doddabetta Peak as we walked ahead of the parking area. Entering which you will see vendors from wearables to eatables. We tried this boiled peanut masala item which was really good.
Doddabetta Peak
Doddabetta Peak is the highest peak in the Nilgiris and is also considered a great trekking spot. Reaching the top you are treated with the best view you can ever see of the blue mountains. Paying a small fee of 10 INR. At a height of 2,637 meters, it is the highest amongst the four peaks in South India. With all the greenery around you get a bird’s-eye view of the entire area with the valley of Ooty in the middle miniaturized by nature.
At the top of the Doddabetta Peak, there was a Telescope House with two telescopes installed to get a better view of the surroundings. It is accessible to everyone but doesn’t work and maybe for a long time as I have read from many people experiencing the same. Hopefully due to the maintenance issues there.
Just to the left of the Telescope House is a well-maintained park for the people to visit. With a rocky area at the end of a defined path. And a corner view of the mountains which was fenced for not allowing people to cross. As it leads you into the forest and signboards written in Tamil maybe to warn you to not go ahead.
After the peak, we had 2-3 hours for the sun to set so we took our bikes and headed to the chocolate and tea factory. Which came in our way to the peak.
