The Anjengo Fort is one of the prime attractions of Varkala. With the rich history of various events that occurred here during the colonial rule. People say that this place was given to the East India Company by the Queen of Attingal for trade purposes. Located in a picturesque location with a secluded beach and the backwaters on both sides. It took around 5-6 years for the fort to be completed after they got the permission to construct the fort.

It was the first trade settlement of the East India Company in Kerala. Which gives this place more importance in the pages of history.

Around the Fort

The fort is properly maintained by the government, with 2-3 people working there that day. It was neat from the inside with some vases of flowers laid on the pavement. You can take the stairs to reach the top of the fort to get a better view of the surroundings of the fort. On one sidr you can see the secluded beach and the Varkala Lighthouse on the other. And that’s it nothing much to see around here except the feel of visiting one of the pages of history.

Inside the Anjengo Fort

As it was hot outside, we took shelter for some time behind one of the walls where the sun couldn’t find us. And later headed over to the lighthouse, which was closed due to construction. But we wanted to see the view from the top of the lighthouse, so we enquired on if it will be open tomorrow. They did not confirm but told us to visit it tomorrow, so we left the place and headed over the beach behind the Anjengo Fort.

The Secluded Beach

To reach the beach we took a random left turn into a small alley as we knew that it will take us there. We had to leave our scooters in the middle as it got narrower from here and it would have been impossible to ride from there. So we walked towards the beach, the path wasn’t that clean before reaching there but we made it.

Inside the Anjengo Fort

It wasn’t that clean too with garbage all around the area. But we were the only people out there, and also didn’t know what the name of that beach was. Hopefully the Kayikkara Beach, we were having fun taking some pictures around the place. When this huge wave came and drenched everything from our clothes to my camera bag. My bag was wet and one of my power banks and my friend’s phone lost their lives there. Sad that the power bank was just 1 week old and not even used much.

Behind the Anjengo Fort

That was when we concluded our visit to our private beach. And headed over to our hotel for changing our clothes and drying the other stuff which was wet. Talk to you guys on my next article till then stay tuned for more adventures.
