Varkala Lighthouse & The Green Sea of Trees
After visiting the Sivagiri Mutt, we had some more time before the evening at Varkala. So we thought of visiting the Varkala Lighthouse, which we missed the last day. And maybe find something new like we did from the top of Anjengo Fort.
Varkala Lighthouse
Varkala Lighthouse or the Archutenga Lighthouse is around 11 km from Sivagiri Mutt. And it was awesome that the distance we covered wasn’t going to waste as the lighthouse was open today. You have to pay Rs 10 each and leave your shoes outside as you enter. It felt like they have painted the lighthouse recently which looked really neat from outside. With not the common lighthouse colour as it was black and white giving a unique feel to it.
We headed towards the top quickly as we had just 20 mins as the ticket guy told us. It is good to maintain such time as people would crowd the place and it becomes a problem for others to get a look at the view. I think we walked over 250 stairs to reach the top of the place to get a panoramic view of the huge Arabian Sea and Kerala.
Green Sea of Trees From the Top of the Lighthouse
With each window we got a sneak peek of the view we will be getting from the top of the lighthouse. So we rushed and climbed the metal stairs after the last group left the place, making the top fully empty for us. We were happy that it was open that day and our efforts paid with the most memorable view of our Varkala visit. On one side we had the never-ending green sea of trees accompanied by the Arabian Sea on the other. Any picture or video can’t do justice to this till you see it by yourself.
You will get to see the best view of the Anjengo Fort from here and also some boats in the backwaters of Kerala. I am not sure, but maybe you can take a ride on those in these waters if anyone has done this do let me know in the comments. After taking a look all around, the view we saw something in the middle of the sea at a distance. Some rocks laid there and nothing much was visible from here so we thought of going to that place.
We were hungry with no lunch that day and the snacks we had to carry was already finished the last day. But wanted to visit that place before the sun would have sunk so we took the straight road. After reaching this bridge, we got to know that it was a beach the Perumathura Beach, with those four-legged stones which I have seen at Marine Drive, Mumbai. But not everyone knows that they are not there just for decoration and that they too have a purpose to serve. They are called the Tetrapods and when they are laid down in an interlocking pattern they form a porous boundary. Which absorbs some of the energy of the waves from the sea.
Perumathura Beach
It was crowded with the locals and the fisherman’s as we saw many out there with their fishing rods. Also, they sell them immediately if you there looking for some fresh fish.
Nothing much here except a good place to end your day. Which ended with us getting all wet in the rain and there wasn’t any shelter to save us. We later drove back to clean up as we were all wet, with more rain accompanying us on the way.
